The One and Only Tim Tebow

Posted by Bharath Subramanian on December 31, 2011

Let's face it; Tim Tebow has been talked about so much in the league that he has become one of the biggest topics in sports this year. Tebow as a starter this season is 7-3, much better than released starting quarter back Kyle Orton who was 1-4 for Denver. Tebow now has a chance to win the division and bring the broncos to the playoffs for the first time since 2005. Though his mechanics and method of play at the quarterbacks position is unusual, it stills gave Denver a winning record and a chance to make the playoffs. This year as a quarter back his stats are as follows:

12 touchdowns to 6 interceptions

1,669 Yards passing

6 rushing touchdowns

644 rushing, avg. 5.6 yards a carry

11 fumbles, 4 lost

A overall QBR of 75.9

7-3 record

Those are pretty good stats for a young quarterback. I also like to add, that he threw 4 of his 6 interceptions in last week's game against the Buffalo Bills. So if you take that away, he has only 6 turnovers between fumbles and interceptions. This is valued a lot in quarterbacks. Tebow may not score a lot in the first three quarters, but he gives a defense a chance to keep the game close. He is not giving the ball away and as such is not allowing opposing offenses to get great field position. Tebow is also a good runner, and teamed up with McGhee, they run the ball a lot and take time off the clock. Tebow is averaging a first down every 2 carries. He is going to get stuffed sometimes but, ultimately he gets the ball deep enough where they can punt the ball away deep or attempt to score (via field goal or touchdown). The other thing I want to touch upon is his game winning drives. He has had 6 game winning drives. He seems to have on switch button and suddenly come alive at the end of games. Most players in general don't like the pressure but, when the game is on the line is when Tebow is at his best. I think this was most evident in the Chicago game where they scored a touchdown and a field goal to tie the game and send it into overtime with just four minutes in the fourth quarter. They then drove to score the game winning field goal in OT. Critics say you have to take into account that Barber ran out of bounds in the fourth quarter to stop the clock and Barber also fumbled the ball in OT when the Bears were close/in field goal range but, they seem to overlook the key thing. In every Sport, there are going to be boneheaded mistakes and luck turned your way. But, it's those that take advantage of the situation and with that overturn the odds to win. Tebow did just that, he took advantage of Barbers mistake and made a drive to put his kicker in position to tie the game, and then to win the game. I like to end by saying I am no Tebow fanatic, but I do want to say he has turned the Denver Broncos season around and as such should be recognized for that. I want to add that credit should be given to the Denver's defense and offense for supporting and buying into Tebow, without them you may not have the same result.
