How about them Giants

Posted by Bharath Subramanian on January 16, 2012

The Giants to this point in the playoffs have been nothing short of a team catching fire and gaining confidence. They beat the Atlanta Falcons at home 24 to 2 and then went to Lambeau Field and beat the Green Bay Packers 37 to 20. Next week they play the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship. Winner goes to the Super Bowl. They have a pretty good shot.

The Giants during the regular season were shaky. It was a three part play if you think about it. They started hot, lost a bunch in a row and then finished with 2 important wins to make the playoffs. A lot of the Giants success goes to Eli Manning. In the past it's been the running game and the defense that defined the Giants, but not that game seems less metallic giving Eli the chance to shine. Let's take a look at the season averages for the top players on the Giants offense:

Eli Manning: 4933 yards, 61 percent completed, 29 TDS to 16 Interceptions and a 92.9 rating.

Hakeem Nicks: 76 rec. for 1192 yards and 7 TDS/ Victor Cruz: 82 rec. for 1536 yards and 9 TDS

Ahmad Bradshaw: 171 carry 659 yards 9 TDS/ Brandon Jacobs: 152 carry 571 yards and 7 TDS.

Not bad for the 8th ranked offense in the NFL. Ultimately the team wins came down to Eli's performance. If I am right, he had 7 game winning drives during the regular season, one being against the Dallas Cowboys down by 12 with 5 minutes to go. He has proven to be a clutch Quarterback this year and certainly has proven to be one of the best in the league. Now let's see the stats for the Playoffs:

Eli Manning: 607 yards, 67.7 percent completed, 6 TDS to 1 Interception and a 121.8 rating

Hakeem Nicks: 13 rec. for 280 yards and 4TDS/ Victor Cruz: 8 rec. 102 yards

Ahmad Bradshaw: 26 carry for 126 yards/ Brandon Jacobs: 23 carry for 114 yards 1TD

During the Playoffs so far, their running game has been a bigger influence and has helped the Giants control the clock in their two victories. Very good stats and hopefully it translates to a Super Bowl. I like to just add Jason Pierre-Paul was a beast this season having 16.5 sacks and an important blocked game winning field goal against the Cowboys. He deserves to make the Pro Bowl, though he may not be able to play. Giants next week against the 49ers, should be great.
