Meltdown of Boston Celtics

Posted by Bharath Subramanian on January 22, 2012

Ever since the Boston Celtics formed the big three (Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett), they have been a dangerous team to watch. The expectations are to win the division and to go deep in the playoffs/win the championship. But, this year has been quite short of that. They are 5 and 9, and 5 games out of the division leader. It may be time for change.

The Boston Celtics have just plain looked old. Garnett is not what he used to be, Ray Allen has become less of threat (even though he is having a pretty good season) and Paul Pierce has slowed down. I believe they need to trade away some pieces and go young. There are two ways to approach this.

One, you trade to get some big names and make one last run for a championship. Guys they can look into are Danny Granger, Andre Igoudala, Paul Millsap or Al Millsap, or even Dwight Howard. Players like Danny Granger and Andre Igoudala are old compared to the young rosters they are on. The Celtics can trade some of the Big 3 for one of the players and bulk their team up. The team receiving from the Boston Celtics get salary cap at the end of the season because the Big three's contracts expire this year. The same concept goes for Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson. To get Dwight Howard, you may need to trade all of the big three. In return you get Dwight, as well as other guys like Hedu Turkoglu to even the salaries. You now pair Rondo with Dwight. Often that's the recipe for a championship team, a solid point guard and a solid center.

Another way to go is to rebuild your team completely. Everybody but, Rondo can be traded for draft picks or young players. Boston looks to rebuild the team and maybe sign a big name in the offseason with the cap space they have. With a shortened season, Boston will have to move quick.
